the point of this blog
there are a lot of pokemon i want to collect and transfer up to HOME before bank inevitably shuts down someday. i know that bank's closure hasn't been announced yet, but with the 3DS wi-fi shut down in april 2024 and not even a whisper of any future-proof offline solution for transferring pokemon up from before the switch era, it feels all but inevitable. in fact, i have a tinfoil hat theory that they're going to announce bank's closure sometime after PLZA comes out, since PLZA should fill in all of the national pokedex gaps that are still left in the main series games (particularly furfrou & the elemental monkeys) and while that's just a theory, if i'm right, we could get a bank closure announcement as soon as october. the list of pokemon i want to transfer up to HOME is wayyyy too big to try to rush it all between a closure announcement and the closure itself, so i've actually been chipping away at my "bank checklist" for a couple of years now. i started future-proofing for this ages ago.

i will be posting gameplay updates, rambling about some of my prized pokemon in my collection, anything to do with this topic goes!

the type of things i want to transfer
you can divide my bank checklist into three main categories: ribbon masters, shiny legendaries/mythicals for the sake of futureproofing a national shiny living dex, and other various collectibles. it's a really long list.

if you aren't aware, "ribbon masters" are pokemon with every ribbon they can obtain from the game they were caught in to the most recent game they can be transferred to, and i am obsessed with ribboning, so this has been my priority category for the past two years. i've actually been working on a big batch of 10 ribbon masters from the gen 3 and 4 games since the beginning of 2024, and they're safe on the switch now and nearly done at the time of writing, only needing the master rank ribbon which i plan on getting this month on all of them! i tend to ribbon master pokemon that are special to me because of a connection with a friend or loved one or important memory, but i also just ribbon pokemon because i really like them sometimes.

as for the shiny legendaries and mythicals, i want to have a shiny living national dex one day and i really want to future-proof these hard-to-obtain targets before it's too late. i am going to be RNG manipulating my entire list where possible to start, and then i can go back and shiny hunt the normal way without worrying about running out of time and missing out on my collection. (i keep mentioning "RNG manipulation" - to clarify if you don't know what that is, think of speedrunning tricks, it's putting in very precise button inputs, sometimes chaining multiple 1/60th of a second inputs, to get the outcome you want, in this case shiny encounters lol. no game hacking or tampering is necessary, i do this all on original hardware. i only know how to do this in gens 3-5, so i'll be shiny hunting anything i need in gens 6-7 manually...)

and the various collectibles... there's a lot of random stuff from the old games that will go extinct when bank shuts down. even if i don't do full ribbon masters, i want species of pokemon with unique old-gen ribbons. i want stuff like the gen 4 sports ball shedinja which is possible due to an oversight. i want various memorials and testaments to my playthroughs over the years. the list goes on.

my style of play
these days i play pokemon as close to the intended experience as humanly possible. that means all original hardware (you will notice all my photos in this blog will be my phone camera pointed at my consoles instead of screenshots), no time-skipping with the console's clock (there are some exceptions for the switch games but that's not really relevant here), no glitches, no exploits (though my definition of an exploit is subjective), etc. i am very experienced in RNG manipulation from gens 3-5, but i also don't do RNG manipulation much anymore just out of personal preference. there are exceptions though! the main thing i don't use it for anymore is getting pokemon with competitive stats for battle facilities. i'm all about the manual old-gen breeding grind now.

i say "these days" because i used to play with RNG manipulation and glitches and exploits and everything constantly! and that's a completely valid way to play, and it was fun! i've just found i prefer the satisfaction of taking on longer grinds nowadays. part of the fun of RNG manipulation, glitches, etc, was learning so much about my favorite video games... but now i know most of what i wanted to know, so it's not as fresh and exciting anymore. i would literally prefer biking back and forth around mauville city in pokemon emerald for weeks to hatch a pokemon with the right hidden power and imperfect IVs just for the sheer satisfaction of doing it than RNG manipulating the perfect competitive pokemon, now.

i will say i am not beyond using less-than-legitimate means to get old events or access old event locations/items, but i will not be sharing how i do that here to comply with bulbagarden's rules. if i mention going to like, faraway island in emerald or something, just take it at face value.

this is actually why i spent nearly 2 years doing my recent batch of 10 ribbon masters - i decided to redo all of my setup. i made new save files in every pokemon game and replayed them and redid all of the prep work for contests, the battle facilities, etc... without RNG manipulation, glitches etc. i spent like, an entire month in the summer of 2024 farming the rare pinch berries in emerald every single day to get stacks of them to use in pokeblocks for contests. i have bred all my battle tower teams manually in every single generation with battle facility ribbons. it was a lot of work (and i'm a college student now, and i have other hobbies, so as you can imagine, i took breaks and whatnot as well)

point is, expect some honest-to-goodness "intended experience" pokemon gaming in this blog lol :bulbaLove:

the Great Bank Checklist(tm)
i am going to put this under a spoiler because it's long. also i really need to clean this up and make it more presentable, but i'll do that later. right now i'm just copy-pasting the notepad file that's been sitting on my computer for two years. originally this was only intended for my eyes so uh... sorry for the mess! if you see random names come up that don't make sense, assume it's referring to one of my alters lol
anything in italics, i already have in HOME (or waiting on a file to be transferred up to HOME). i will try to update this regularly as i obtain targets

rules for replies on this blog
anyone is welcome to comment on this blog! actually i'd love interaction a lot, i'm really passionate about my pokemon collection. i just ask that on top of the usual bulbagarden rules, you abide by these rules too:
  1. please don't attempt to start a discussion with me about the legitimacy of my playstyle. this is not the place to tell me RNG manipulation is bad or whatever. all of this is singleplayer for my own collection and i play how i want
  2. this is basically already included in bulbagarden's rules but i want to emphasize, please don't ask me how to access old events past their expiration. if you really want to do it i'm sure you can figure it out
  3. if you're confused about how i did something, i encourage questions and i'd love to answer, but please never assume that i've cheated in any way unless i directly bring it up. i pretty much never use cheat codes, save editors, etc, and when i do i'm very transparent about it!

that's about it, hope you enjoy, and thanks for reading this intro post if you got this far lol. i've been typing this up for over 30 minutes

at times in this thread, i may go in-depth on a pokemon from my collection or write a particularly long post detailing something notable in my transfer collection journey. below you can easily navigate to any of those posts.

This is so damn cool!! what an inspiring passion project!! I love seeing the myriad of ways that people create and discover new value in these games and the ways we’re able to engage with them! I had never heard of Ribboning before this but that sounds like a really special way to put some extra time and love into having a very unique and meaningful Mon. I’m rooting for you and I’m excited for further updates, I think this is an awesome undertaking and I really hope you’re able to achieve your goals before any closures happen! :yay:

That's pretty cool! Though it's the first time I see a project like this without an actual shutdown deadline.

thank you so much this is so kind :bulbaLove: i hadn't heard of ribboning myself until very early 2020 where i found out about it because of a youtube video of all things. within a few years i became a discord moderator for the ribbon master challenge's official discord community. while i absolutely do not claim to have the most ribbon masters because there's absolutely multiple people out there crazier than me and i've even personally met some of them, i do think i have more ribbons than like... the vast majority of people. i'm really passionate about it and i'm working on a very detailed complete ribbon master guide in my free time, though that'll take so long to finish it frankly might not be finished before the looming bank shutdown. i'm just doing it out of love for the process anyway though, so even if a full pre-switch ribbon master won't be possible anymore in the future, i want to write it all anyway! but uh i'm rambling. thank you lol

That's pretty cool! Though it's the first time I see a project like this without an actual shutdown deadline.
it's just because of how big my list is :bulbaFacepalm: i wasn't super worried about it until HOME updated to use server-side trackers which will make transferring pokemon from before the switch pretty much impossible after bank shuts down, even with... less than legitimate means and tools. now there really is a hard time limit unless a miracle happens and considering my current batch of ribbon masters took nearly 2 years, i'm very glad i got started early LOL. i started before they even announced the 3DS wi-fi shutdown!

I think there’s a lot of value in documenting these types of things even if they become impossible to replicate going forward! It’s a snapshot into a special microcosm of the culture surrounding these games and it would be a shame to see it get lost. You’re doing awesome work =]

i was trying to update that second post in the thread with stuff about my collection but i forgot just how wordy i can be, as well as the amount of images i like to include, so i've decided i will instead turn that post into a directory that links to all the replies where i've detailed out parts of my collection. i will not have enough room in the future otherwise LOL.

i'll sporadically write more about my transfer collection whenever i feel like it in whatever order i feel like. i'm in a sappy mood this morning, so i guess i'm going to hand you some of my most sentimental and sappy pokemon to start, in no particular order. there's images in these spoiler tags but i've downsized all of them to be 600 pixels maximum on the longest side so it shouldn't be hard to look at or read.

NeverHappy, Riku, and Hope

Name/Title: NeverHappy the Living Legend
OT: Platina (31840)
Met Date: 3/26/2016 (Messed up in-game due to DS clock at transfer to gen 5)
Ball: Poké Ball
Origin Game: Platinum

NeverHappy is perhaps my most internet famous ribbon master, as she has a semi-viral tumblr post about her. it's an old post from 2022, and frankly i'd change a lot about it now (i hesitated on going into detail on certain things because i felt insecure rambling so much, etc) but if you'd like to read more about her for whatever reason, the post is here, but you can also just stick around and read my short summary here.

you may be wondering why on earth i would name a pokemon NeverHappy. understandable question. the answer is that i didn't name her. i lost my childhood pokemon platinum cartridge at some point, who knows when or how, and back in late 2020 i wanted to replace my lost copy, so i bought one secondhand. whenever i buy secondhand pokemon games, i always check if there's a save file already on it, and explore it fully before wiping it. i've rescued a lot of legendaries and shinies this way! but in 2020, a legendary or a shiny wasn't what caught my eye. it was a simple budew named NeverHappy.

i don't know what if it was the creepypasta-esque name making me nostalgic or if there was just something in the water that day, but i was absolutely struck by this poor budew. the file, named Platina, was from 2016, only had two badges, and all the pokemon going unused in the box had joke names of some sort. "NeverHappy" was obviously a jab at budew being a friendship/happiness evolution, because they never planned on using the poor thing. my heart was stirred and i had to rescue her. so, i traded her to my personal copy of soulsilver before wiping platina's file. i took her on a ribbon master journey to give her the life she was never supposed to have, and of course, she became so happy she evolved! she's been in every main region and done pretty much everything a pokemon can possibly do. she is still one of my most beloved pokemon to this day, even as she sits in PLA, waiting for PLZA to come out because the budew line isn't in SV. notably, she was not my first ribbon master, but the first ribbon master i ever successfully completed and i consider her a sort of kick-off for this hobby of mine that ended up changing my life.

Name/Title: Riku the Treasured Memory
OT: Kafu (45682)
Met Date: 5/3/2023
Ball: Premier Ball
Origin Game: Emerald

in the summer of 2023, i did a hardcore nuzlocke of pokemon emerald where i named all my encounters by spinning a wheel with my friends' names on it. when i caught a trapinch, the wheel landed on Riku. that trapinch eventually evolved into a flygon and was on the e4 team that took that run to the hall of fame.

...in january 2024, the real Riku passed away.

like i promised in the spoiler title, i don't plan on getting too heavy here. but essentially, Riku was a daily presence in my life and he was the first person to ever pass away in my life who i truly had to grieve. part of that process ended up being ribbon mastering the two pokemon he left behind - a pichu not relevant to this thread because it's from the switch (he lived in south korea and picked me up the korean-exclusive "pikachu colored pichu" event rerun from a movie theater in real life) and the flygon i had named after him. as heavy as the subject matter is, it's impossible for me to talk about ribbon mastering without mentioning him because of how integral ribbon mastering Riku the flygon was to processing serious grief for the first time, as well as honoring the legacy of my friend who i still miss all the time. i love you, Riku!

(the art below is art that i personally drew in the wake of his passing, which also features his favorite singer, isekaijoucho. the game screenshot looks strange because it's from capture card footage, but upscaled and then downscaled again.)

Name/Title: Hope the Once Shaken
OT: [REDACTED] (40342)
Met Date: 11/26/2007
Ball: Poké Ball
Origin Game: Pearl

Hope is a buizel from my very first pokemon pearl playthrough when i was 7 years old. i've never been super huge on the pokemon anime (until pokemon horizons) but i did watch a little bit of the diamond and pearl anime as it was airing when i was a kid, and if the anime did anything for me, it was making me obsessed with buizel. i looooved buizel. so, when i finally got pearl as an early birthday present during a thanksgiving vacation to my grandparents' house, i added a buizel to my team as soon as i could. i never evolved her, and the original hall of fame data for me beating the game for the first time reflects as much. i actually had an unevolved pikachu in the hall of fame too LOL.

unfortunately, the grandparents who gave that pearl cartridge to me, particularly my grandfather, had a heavy hand in abusing me as a child. i will not detail any more than that because i don't think it's appropriate for this forum, but let's just say it was pretty bad and there's a reason i have dissociative identity disorder. pokemon was absolutely fundamental to me coping with and surviving the abuse as a child, and it's part of the reason it's so core to my existence today.

tragically, most of my original pokemon, including everything from my very first pokemon game, leafgreen, are lost to the sands of time. even my pokemon pearl, one of the very very few childhood cartridges and save files that survived, had most of my pokemon missing because i traded most of them to diamond as a kid, which has since been lost. the file is a wasteland with hundreds of hours but nothing to show for it... except for Hope.

when i located Hope in the PC a couple years ago, i sobbed my eyes out. i couldn't believe i still had anything from that time of my life. she was so well loved, already had a couple ribbons, was completely full on poffins (her contest stats were awful by the way, getting the rest of the contest ribbons on her was a nightmare), etc. the trainer name i cannot share, because it's my legal name/deadname that i don't use anymore. of course i immediately decided to ribbon master her. and i gave her the name Hope for the first time - because she actually didn't even have a nickname at first. as a kid, i considered the pokemon species names to just... be the pokemon's name, most of the time. i named her Hope after what she represented for me - hope in a seemingly hopeless situation.

if i had to name one pokemon as my absolute most important and most beloved pokemon, it would be Hope in a heartbeat. there is no pokemon more sacred to me than her.

(the art below was drawn by my friend tony.)

i promise future pokemon collection rambles will not be so emotional!! i have a lot of pokemon in my collection that are very cool and worth talking about that don't involve dark subject matter!!! LOL

also, thank you for all the kind words everyone!! :bulbaLove:

edit: i forgot i wanted to add their ribbon titles and pokeballs and stuff! whoops! i added that in.

I’m so sorry you’ve endured so much loss and hardship in your life. It’s really special that you’ve managed to find so much catharsis and joy in something for so long and that it continues to provide you with it even to this day. Cultivating a digital “garden” that doubles as a memorial is an incredible way of making art in conversation with this thing that’s shaped so much of your life. I hope it continues to be here for you forever

i've never had anyone refer to it as a "digital garden" before but if you don't mind, i'm going to steal that because it's SUCH a good descriptor lol. thank you very much for the kindness, i'm teary-eyed about it :bulbaHugs::bulbaHugs:

and it will be with me forever... because i hoard my pokemon data like a dragon. my save file PCs and my HOME are extremely organized. i backup all my data wherever possible so i have copies of my pokemon on multiple harddrives and the cloud. you can rip my pokemon from my cold, dead hands LOOOL

i started shiny hunting type:null today! kind of. i wanted something to fiddle with while going out to dinner with my family so i decided to spontaneously start it with one 3ds, though i plan on double hunting with two 3dses.
random1.png

type:null ft. pagogo and a blooming onion. no i don't know what got on pagogo's head. yes i have since wiped her off.

there are four shinies i need to hunt before bank's closure that are full odds as a result of not being impacted by the shiny charm. those are two type:null gifts (one to evolve into silvally) and two poipole gifts (one to evolve into naganadel). i actually didn't realize until i was at dinner tonight that i completely forgot about poipole in my checklist because it's... technically an ultra beast and not a legendary pokemon, but you also can't encounter it like any of the other ultra beasts. i cannot hunt it in the wormholes. :bulbaFacepalm: so anyway since i'm pivoting into handling all these shinies, i figured i should get started on these four ASAP. type:null i already have set up to double hunt but i need to finish an ultra sun playthrough i started before i can double hunt poipole. and then i suppose i will single hunt the second one unless i feel like playing through USUM again, which is a little bit of an ordeal. i don't know, i'll figure it out as i go.

small edit the day after that doesn't warrant an entirely new post: i was going to double hunt type:null awkwardly between moon and ultra moon but last night i thought i should check my original sun file from 2016 on the very off chance that i never claimed type:null on it... and lo and behold i actually never did. so i'm double hunting with sm now which is much less awkward. nice

another shiny hunting update! alongside starting type:null, i am also getting back to jirachi this week.
jirachi1.png
jirachi2.png

small infodump for those who aren't aware of how infamous jirachi is to shiny hunt: jirachi is available to shiny hunt via two legitimate methods. during generation 3, two ways to get infinite jirachi without a time limit were released: the international colosseum bonus disc, a preorder bonus for pokemon colosseum on the gamecube, and specifically PAL (european/australian) copies of pokemon channel. both have a small chance to distribute a shiny jirachi, channel being full odds at 1/8192 and the bonus disc being 1/7281.7 due to the strange way it generates the jirachi. both will only give out one jirachi per save file, which throws a wrench into shiny hunting either.

previously, only "WISHMKR" (wishmaker) jirachi was considered viable to shiny hunt because you can distribute the jirachi to ruby/sapphire as soon as you get the pokedex, so you would play through the entire RS intro up to that point on every reset. this was an absolutely brutal way to shiny hunt and considered one of the most arduous shiny hunts in existence, but it was the only way to do it. PAL channel doesn't let you distribute jirachi until you've beaten the champion, so in theory you would have to beat the entire game on every reset. of course, that's completely unviable.

however, in recent years, it was discovered that you can distribute infinite jirachi to a single copy of ruby/sapphire with either option by turning off the GBA in the middle of deleting your save data. this is because the GBA pokemon games actually have two save files, a main and a backup in case something goes wrong with the main save, and by interrupting the save deletion process, you can corrupt the save block with the jirachi on it and restore your save file back to the one that never received jirachi. these resets are still long and involve two consoles and a lot of inputs, so it's still very time consuming and heavy on focus, but it is much much better than doing the 10-13 minutes per jirachi check that this hunt required before.

you may be wondering why i'm not RNG manipulating jirachi like i plan to with all the other old-gen mythicals and legendaries. the answer is that RNG manipulating the colosseum bonus disc jirachi is extremely difficult and precise, and i simply don't want to do it. RNG manipulating PAL channel is actually pretty easy, but i don't currently own it or a PAL console to play it on. i also just think wishmaker jirachi is a lot cooler and i already own the bonus disc, so i would prefer to have it if possible. if push comes to shove and i don't get this extremely time consuming jirachi hunt in time, i will either buy PAL channel and RNG manipulate it, or force myself through RNGing the bonus disc; i don't know what i'll do yet, and i hope it just doesn't come to that.

i already knocked out over a thousand resets on this hunt in june but had to put it down because of my girlfriend coming to meet me in person for the first time and some other real-life stuff. yesterday i set my gamecube and everything back up so now i can get back to it! i'm hoping i can do type null at the same time but i'm unsure i'll be able to multitask all that with my hands, we'll see lol

OMG it's so awesome seeing another forum member doing ribbon mastering!!! i actually made my own bulbablog documenting my journey, i put it on hiatus for a while but i was actually thinking of reviving it soon!
i remember seeing the post about neverhappy on tumblr a while back. the story about riku the flygon was also really touching, you have some really special pokemon, and some really special adventures :bulbaLove:
p.s. it's also nice seeing another rng manip enthusiast, learning how to do it was legit life-changing for me LOL
